With a unique collection of towns and villages, including Duntroon, Kurow and Otematata, combined with the large town of Oamaru, there is plenty to see and do in the Waitaki Valley, especially for those that want to enjoy a genuine New Zealand outdoor holiday away from the boring well worn tourist path!

From fishing and boating, to walking, hunting, hiking, jet boating, gliding, ski-ing, horse trekking, golfing, fossil hunting or mountain biking, it’s all right here in the beautiful Waitaki Valley.

Located at the junction of State Highway 82 and State Highway 83, the township of Kurow is considered the ‘Gateway to the High Country’ and is also the service township for the farming community. Along with a great selection of services (including a Visitor Information Centre), accommodation, shops and cafes, Kurow has developed a reputation as an excellent trout fishing location, while the river is considered one of the best jet boating rivers in New Zealand.

Kurow and surrounding areas are also becoming well known for the award winning wines that are being developed from grapes grown in the region, while Duntroon is home to The Vanished World Centre, famous for its display of fossils and rocks, and a visit to the Benmore Dam and lake offer an insight into water generated power in New Zealand.

The Waitaki Valley is an outdoor paradise and offers plenty of activities and attractions for international visitors.
